Overview
Mera Peak is one of the gorgeous peak decorated with dazzling thick layers of snow over pointy edged cliff. It lies in the Mahalangur section and Barun sub-section of Himalaya range. Resting predominantly in Sagarmatha Zone and Solukhumbu district, the peak rises at an elevation of 6476 metres. Mera Peak is comprised of three major summits i.e. Mera North (6476m), Mera Central (6461), Mera South (6065m) and small trekking summit visible from the south but not generally marked on most maps of this region.
In early 50s, British expeditioners explored the whole region colossally while climbing Everest. Most of those teams included Tenzing Norgay, Edmund Hillary, Eric Shipton and George Lowe. After the discovery of Mera peak, Col. Jimmy Roberts and Sen Tenzing did their first ascent of Mera Central on May 20, 1953. The main commercial route for climbing is via north which involves hiking on high-altitude glacier. The west and south faces of Mera Peak is considered more difficult than other faces. Being nestled among famous mountains, Its summit provides stunning views of major mountains. Some 8000m peaks are also visible from its top. They are: Mount Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu and Kangchenjunga. Other smaller Himalayan peaks are also clearly visible. Proper acclimatization is very necessary prior to the ascent to summit.
